Halo Legends OVA 1 Impressions – The Origins

ATTENTION: This episode was produced by captive Flood animators while the production crew was busy drinking the budget up.

[22:57] (+NovaJinx) Halo Legends, I am not impress
[22:57] (+NovaJinx) I somehow expected more than what reminds me of the shitty flash animations in Mirror’s Edge

Yeah, I watched this shit, as much as I hate to admit it. And I’m going to watch all the remaining six short films in the series. What I hope is that the ten-penny flash animation style Studio 4C decided to utilize for “artistic” touch didn’t get rubbed on the rest. (Actually fuck that shit, I have better things to do.) Seriously, it’s not like I associate 4C with visual splendor but you could have at least tried. Considering that this is an addition to a multi-million money machine of a brand, you wouldn’t think the production crews need to cut down on the actually animated content due to budgeting reasons. Then again, it’s like iPad – it’ll sell itself, why bother?

The premise of the Origins is somewhat interesting, being sort of a history lecture in the same way as The Second Renaissance OVAs in Animatrix. Unfortunately Babysitter is merely but a half-assed copy with barely 10 minutes of actual content and pretty but simplified, cartoonish backgrounds and little else. The few characters that appear remind me of Flash-animations, being just about as lively as printed pieces of cardboard. Cortana lectures us about the history of the Flood and the Forerunners but aside from seeing what Forerunners kinda look like, it’s not like there is much that you hadn’t already figured out on your own if you played the games without being asleep. Forerunners prospered, Flood came and ate them, Forerunners built Halos and nuked the fuck out of the galaxy. Also, the entire last third of the OVA is dedicated to credits which are more than plentiful. 10 minutes of poorly animated history lecture most of which you knew already, and 6 minutes of watching text roll. Also, the English voice acting doesn’t really sound all that great, it’s like Cortana’s voice actress was feeling just as lazy as the animation production crew and autopiloted the whole thing.

QUALITY BEEEEEEMU

[22:59] (+NovaJinx) also
[22:59] (+NovaJinx) like 30% of the episode
[22:59] (+NovaJinx) is fucking credits
[22:59] (+NovaJinx) lol wut mang
[22:59] (+NovaJinx) this is like Animatrix Lite

Production IG is next on the helm with the OVA 2 and I sure hope they won’t let me down like this. I can let this one slide since it’s as far as 4C can go apparently, but I’ve learned to expect big things of IG.

[23:10] (+NovaJinx) I think studio 4C is pretty cool guy
[23:11] (+NovaJinx) eh animates in flash and doesnt afraid of anything

P.S. Looks like I made a mistake with the title, the name’s Origins, not Babysitter. Stupid miss on my part.

I’ve seen the Production IG episode and, bar some questionable voice acting, it was actually pretty well done. Haven’t seen this but judging by the screencaps I guess it’s not worth watching

The only ones I liked were the Babysitter and the Duel. The others were kinda half-assed, Saturday morning cartoonish quality.
