Winter 2010 First Impressions – Omamori Himari

Damn you, Koshimizu Ami!

Omamori Himari looks just as awful as I hoped and feared it would. Hoped because I knew I’d have something to make fun of. Feared because I think the manga is decent and would like to see the anime do it some justice it deserves.

Based on an ecchi manga and adapted by ZEXCS, Omamori Himari is about Yuuto, a guy born in a family of famous demon slayers. Thus pretty much every demon on the globe is after his ass but unfortunately the guy himself is a peace-loving wimp. A hot cat demon Himari is sent to protect Yuuto under a vow she made to his grandfather who spared her life. Not bad for an ecchi show, at least comparing to some recent alternatives. Too bad the animation crew has no budget or intention to actually produce a decent anime adaptation.

Omamori Himari looks pretty damn awful. The visuals are plain at best and character animation is wonky, with jerky movements and frequent drawing errors. Backgrounds are hardly worth mentioning either and the music mostly just makes me hope I was born deaf. Rinko’s rookie seiyuu Nomizu Iori seems to struggle a bit with her role, although she gets much better towards the end. So is there anything in Omamori Himari that’s worth watching? If you’re not a fan of the manga, hardly. But hey, I’ve typed much of this already on IRC so just let the logs do the talking here.

So yeah. Omamori Himari is an awful anime without a doubt. But the bastards pulled out an ace: Koshimizu Ami in her sexy foreplay voice mode. A voice that has quite hard impact on every self-respecting heterosexual male on the planet. In the end I’m left with no choice but to keep Omamori Himari in the schedule – the animation is horrible but Koshimizu’s hot voice is just too irresistible to miss.
