Winter 2009-2010 Season Initial Watchlist
Author: NovaJinx

I suppose it’s about time to have a look at the next season now that fall 2009 is pretty much over and done with. Hope you all had a nice and relaxing Christmas – personally I was just counting days to work. I’m too old to really care much about presents anymore – the biggest thing I got was getting me Disgaea 2 for PSP and playing it like a mofo. I love that game, it’s like Disgaea 1 but everything is better. And Rozalin is so hot.
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (Silver Link)

Uh… so it’s about a school where good students are grouped by their academic success and of course the shittiest students get the shittiest treatment and a classroom that’s pretty much falling apart. Also, there’s some Zero no Tsukaima-ish stuff mixed in here as all students at this said school are required to summon monsters that are directly proportional in power levels to the summoning student’s academic potential. So the best class has the best monsters and so on. The protagonist is placed in the bottom-feeder F-class and decides to beat the top A-class’ collective ass in the battles fought with these monsters. Sound like Pokeyman? Sure enough, but the school setting gives it an interesting if somewhat clichéd twist.
Dance in the Vampire Bund (SHAFT)

I hate vampires. They used to be cool back in the day of classic literature. Then at some point every teenage girl on the planet started thinking that vampires are hot and the entertainment industry got a hold of that. So now vampires are mainly oh-look-I’m-tough-and-independent-women in leather suits, generic high school jocks who talk like homosexuals and just general “cool” bad dudes ripped off Matrix. Where did the badass bald old men with huge teeth go? But anyway, in anime vampires either mean that the show is just generally shitty or for girls. However, Bund might be a bit different because it actually seems to be less about vampires and more about politics. Basically a rich vampire girl Mina pays off the entire national debt of Japan and in exchange gets an offshore territory for all the vampires to settle, called Bund. Mina wants to expose the existence of vampires to the world and establish a peaceful coexistence between them and humans, but extremist groups within both human and the vampire society do all they can to interfere with her plan. I can’t say no to this kind of big picture stuff, political thrillers have always been my thing after all. Just as long as the focus of the show is something else that vampires being omglookheslieksocool and charming teenage girls.
Durarara!! (Brains Base)

“Distorted love story“. All it takes to get my undivided attention. Durarara!! seems to be a show about street thugs, anonymous internet gangs and general badassery. And an Irish woman looking for her stolen head. Sounds way too interesting to miss.
Hidamari Sketch X*** (SHAFT)

HNNNNNNGGGG
I think SHAFT is a pretty cool guy. eh slices liefs and doesn’t afraid of anything.
Seriously, you know the drill here.
Also, fat Hiro is so fat.
Ladies Vs. Butlers! (XEBEC)

Oh this shit looks awfully familiar…uhh, Saten, you’re up for this one.

So yeah, from the same fucktards who brought us Kanokon, one of the most tasteless shitpiles ever. Hopefully this one has at least less furry. Can’t say no to Kawasumi Ayako, at least not right off the bat. Look forward to huge boobs and hairstyles that shall pierce the heavens.
Omamori Himari (ZEXCS)

Ooh, finally an adaptation of the fap-a-licious manga. Also, Koshimizu Ami is voicing Himari. And that’s about it. You can already see from the promo art that this isn’t going to look good at all. Rinko looks like a fish up there – that’s what I call the KimiKiss-eyes. Not that anyone gives a shit about Rinko but this is hardly a good sign. I would be disappoint if I was even expecting anything to begin with. Watching it so I can make fun of it.
Ookamikakushi (AIC)

Since Pararin insisted so much. Sounds like another case of Chaos;HEAditis – looks good on paper and gorgeous at first, only to degenerate faster than a Finnish parliament member’s sense of morales as soon as the election is over. It could be good but I’m very doubtful it will be anything better than C;H or 11eyes. Can Ryukishi07 save the day after DEEN just finished with ruining another one of his titles?
Sora no Woto (A-1 Pictures)

I suppose this will be my season highlight in addition to Durarara!!. At least judging from the trailer this looks exactly like my kind of show. A-1 has proven itself capable of solid production and thus I have quite high expectations for this one. The character animation resembles K-ON! more than just a bit with its focus on fluidity on the expense of detail. I’ve heard some complain about it but I don’t think it’s all that bad choice – personally I’d pick that over detailed but clumsy characters à la Valkyria Chronicles. That all remains to be seen of course but this show looks like something that’s less based on character animation and more on the story and atmosphere. A-1, do not let me down.
And that’s all for now! I don’t really feel like writing up a fall season end post to be honest, I’ve yet to even catch up with most of the series. It will happen if it happens I suppose. Also, I have a nagging feeling that this will haunt me at work today…

2009 lineup is so exciting ^_^
For myself, I think I’ll check out Sora no Woto (Yuu Kobayashi~), Dance in the Vampire Bund, Ladies vs Butlers, Chu~Bara, Omahima! and Bakatest ^_^
>I hate vampires. They used to be cool back in the day of classic literature.
Yes. Because VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE.
That strip of Saten ^___^ lol… I’m coinciding about 80% with your picks, :)
I was originally interested in Bund because of lots of blood, violence and vampires as badass as Alucard. But I didn’t know about the politics, that’s certainly raised my expectations of that show a lot.
Also, Durarararararararararara
What about Seikon no Qwaser?
Tit sucking?!
@ Yagami
Sounds too much like Kurokami. Pass.
