The Twelve Moments project comes to an end at last. I think I’ve already listen enough memories in the previous posts so let’s wrap this thing up with a Top 5-list. Why not Top 10? Because honestly I did not witness all that many great shows and I hate to put mediocre shows on Top-lists. Since they’re not really top in any way – that’s why they’re called mediocre after all.
Twelve Moments #12 – Top 5 of 2009
1st – Bakemonogatari (SHAFT)

Hardly any doubt here, Bakemonogatari proved that even in these dark times of half-assed otaku in-joke shows something new and refreshing can be created.
2nd – Trapeze / Kuuchuu Buranko (Toei)

Originality? In MY anime? Much the same as Bakemonogatari, Trapeze proves that the industry still has what it takes to take the medium further than trash food entertainment. When it wants to. Bonus points for the best OP of the season. Denki Groove just can’t be beat.
3rd – Eden of the East (Production IG)

Yeah, the third place is also dominated by another obscure show. Eden of the East impressed with its way of making a mature version of the people-with-super-powers-competing-setting. The show was super short and the ending was what it was, but it was undeniably awesome while it lasted. I also liked the references to Western entertainment culture, something you don’t see in Jap shows all that much. Not to mention the use of actually English-speaking VA’s for foreign characters. And the kickass animation. And the OP song only rivaled by Trapeze in awesomeness. Can’t wait for the movies.
4th – GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class (AIC PLUS)

With all this said about the obscure and pretentious series being the best, GA shows that moe blob format can be damn entertaining if it’s done well. Shame on all the English fansubber fags for neglecting this show, its entertainment value in summer 2009 season was only rivaled by SHAFT’s projects at the time. GA was relaxing, funny and informative too. And I love the music. By the way, Yen Press has released the first volume of the manga in English. Recommended.
5th – K-ON! (Kyoto Animation)

Yeah yeah, call me a fag for having this up here. But as much as I’d like to diss K-ON! for being another show only popular because it’s KyoAni, I cannot ignore its impressive entertainment value. K-ON! is a prime example of the trash food entertainment I mentioned earlier, but it’s not like I don’t every now and then enjoy a big juicy burger with overly salty fries and a cup of liquid sugar some call Coke. That said, it only keeps you content for half an hour. Then you fart and feel hungry again. Nothing groundbreaking or original but nevertheless entertaining.
Great shit! I’ll have to wait until I finish up K-ON! but I think my top 5 might include the Baseball Girls and the second coming of Horo. :)
Merry Christmas!
