Nyan Koi!, I am disappoint. The fourth episode was full of fail with totally screwed up pacing, lame joke execution and poor seiyuu performance. As always, Asanuma Shintaro delivers a solid performance as Junpei but Kobayashi Yuu wasn’t quite up to the task as a reverse trap. Or maybe it’s just the poor script for her character. Also, Shiraishi Ryouko isn’t all that great for voicing high school girls and now her voice is combined with the most annoying female character in the history of romance comedy anime. But unfortunately the problem with NK! lies deeper than mere seiyuu work.
Seriously, Sumiyoshi is ruining NK! for me. Leaving aside the fact that she’s not cute at all, she acts like a total hypocritical bitch. For myself the last straw was the end of the fifth episode when in her monologue she rants about Junpei not being able to confess to Kaede. Well no shit he’s not! Guess who’s been the one torpedoing his every chance and attempt to do so? Seriously phone calling Kaede right when Junpei was about to make a decisive move on her was the most unfair shit I’ve ever fucking seen. God damn, now I’m all pissed again. Need to cool down for a bit, hang on…
Much better. I don’t think I’d normally even care all that much about her but Kaede’s cuteness is just too overwhelming and it drives me mad to see a jealous bitch ruin Junpei’s chances time and time again to score with her (especially since it’s now quite clear that Kaede has feelings for him too). I disliked Nagi at first too but her best efforts to counter Sumiyoshi’s sabotage attempts were enough to earn her a few points in my book.

Over all Nyan Koi! is starting get bogged down by some unlikeable characters and too heavy reliance on slapstick that’s mostly Sumiyoshi-blocking-Junpei’s-attempt-to-get-close-to-Kaede-and-then-punching-him-in-the-face. Hurr durr. Not to mention forcing all the Sumiyoshi’s sad-tsundere-childhood-bullshit. The show had solid comedic potential but now it’s all left unused and this really disappoints me. Give me back the same style from the first few eps and stop with this bipolar slapstick drama crap. Because Kaede is so damn moewhelming and the few scenes between her and Junpei are sweet as the friday night drinks of a generic Finnish teenager, I will stick with Nyan Koi! come what may. Also the twintail-zettai-ryouiki-twins finally make their appearance and I can’t say no to two Tomatsu Haruka characters in a show. That all said, one episode more of this Sumiyoshi bullshit and half-assed joke deployment and Nyan Koi! will join Seitokai no Ichizon in the low tier.
