A Certain Sacred Blacksmith

DAT SAUCE.
After reading Komidol’s post on it, I decided to give Blacksmith a go since I have a feeling that Railgun is going to be drop-worthy soon enough. But is it better than Railgun as it stands now? Yes and no.

Blacksmith beats Railgun in one department: It’s trying to be interesting, progressive and reasonably serious. Railgun’s current problem is that it’s wasting time dicking around with rather stupid filler shit and seems to be satisfied with merely poking the audience with goofy Kuroko x Mikoto-yuri-implications. I’m also disappointed with how Mikoto’s fierce personality has been totally watered down in Railgun…but let’s not get into that, I will be posting a full-scale RAGE-post if/when the time is right.

But the problem with Blacksmith is that it’s trying way too hard. Honestly, if they would tone the seriousness and attempts at Epic Fantasy Tale a bit, the show would be a lot less banal and flat than it is now. The production crew seems to have lost control of their own project, being too indecisive on whether to employ a cute-n’-fluffy or bloody-n’-gritty approach on the subject. So instead of making a decision, Manglobe tries to mix elements from both without minding the resulting awkward contrast between the scenes. We observe cute girls having lunch and a moment later get a flashback of big men cutting each other with pointy metal sticks, zombies that spit screeching worms and whatnot. It’s just that as cute as Cecily, Aria and Lisa (fuck year Toyosaki Aki) are, they don’t really fit in a story that seems to be all about satanic rituals bringing about the end of the world.

This sorta reminds me of Starship Troopers 2. Oh God. But then again…

That said, it is more successful than for example Hal Film Maker’s hilariously bad Night Wizard (above). But as it stands now, Blacksmith is trying way too hard to be EBIC SRS BSNS and mixes in elements that do not fit in the dark story, thus paving the way to mediocrity. I’m not really sure I can recommend even to the fans of the genre, although hopefully it will at least feature some slick action in the near future. Also, Cecily’s incompetence and Luke’s overdone male-tsundere are giving me a headache.

Well this episode in particular was better than railgun, but one bad episode of railgun isn’t going to kill the series. I think the next one will be rather meh as well, I’m pretty sure the actual story is going to start at episode 5.
How it progresses from there, :it is a mystery:
But yeah, Blacksmith tries a little too hard, but it’s easy to watch. A point that is becoming more and more critical as seasons go on. Watching so much anime…you’re always thinking when you watch an episode “is it worth my time.” And blogging, even moreso.
Yea, I can’t really grab an attachment to Blacksmith. If I start to lose interest in consecutive episodes, I’ll likely drop it. It’s not bad though. Railgun is fine too, at least the production values are appealing; it is totally jerking around though.
Yup.

[...] plot line actually starting. This is more what I expect from this franchise. Needless to say, other people aren’t as satisfied with that, but those people watch Trapeze, making them tremendous faggots [...]
I’d watch it for Cecily’s hotness.
Just because.
