Can Someone Tell Me Why Chrome Shelled Regios Isn’t A Pile Of Mediocrity

Because honestly, I don’t get it. Hashihime recently posted an article about the 2channel popularity of the currently running shows. For the most part it’s pretty much what I’d expect. Except for Chrome Shelled Regios, which is ranked 2nd best of those that began their run this season. I don’t understand because to me Chrome Shelled Regios has been hanging somewhere in the gray zone between mediocre and retarded. So if someone can tell me why this show is supposed to be as good as this list indicates, please do. Or is it just another proof of people’s shitty taste in things?
The way I see it, the problem with Chrome Shelled Regios is its weak cast. Most characters in Regios are just simply flat, unlikeable or boring – and usually at least two of these. Especially Layfon and Nina who both only manage to annoy me. Neither really feel like lifelike characters that one might actually care about. The little the show is willing to tell about their backstories feels mostly like generic fantasy stuff that anyone could come up with while taking a hangover dump (well, I believe Moomin were created in this manner so I guess I shouldn’t make fun of it). Layfon has a bit more interesting sides to his past, but the guy himself is boring as shit and your textbook good guy who will throw his pacifism out of the window the second there’s need to PROTECT MA FRIENDS.

Nina is less yawny to watch but she’s also much less likeable. Anyone who has gone through military service can tell that people like her just aren’t cut out to lead other people. She’s effective at fighting and going solo but neither of these are leadership-related qualities. Nina is a grunt born to do grunt work but she obviously lacks leadership capabilities. I can’t help but to side with the rivaling platoons and think that Platoon 17 would be better off disbanded and its members reassigned to other platoons where they can actually make themselves useful. Oh wait, but the rivaling platoons are all nasty conceited people just for shits and giggles! Now ain’t that original.
In fact I found it hard to even care about the entire human population in Regios and that’s mainly because the show is just so fucking stingy about answering some pretty vital questions. What the hell are these cities? What’s up with the planet they’re on? What the fuck are the Filth Monsters? Hell, WATS GOIN ON GAISE? Why isn’t anybody telling me this shit? I have the feeling that Regios is going to repeat the mistakes of To Aru Majutsu No Index in novel adaptation (bad Nova, BAD NOVA! You promised no moar index!). You see, it’s pretty damn hard to give a shit about something you don’t know a thing about. Also, what’s with the baker chick being ga ga over Layfon? Get her off the air, I beg of you.
Oh well, at least there’s Felli. So yet again I’m watching a show just for the chicks.
