Spring 08 Season First Impressions Act II
Author: nova

Without any more babbling, here’s the second part of the Jinx!’s overview on the starting season. Fanservice, good ol’ adventure, cute shrine maidens and merciless street fighting ahead!
To-Love-Ru

Remember Kanokon? To-Love-Ru another fanservice-strong show in the season, but appears to have a bit more added into the mix. TLR is like improved Kanokon, with shouta and animal features removed, better animation, less blatant (and hotter, amirite?) fanservice and lightning-speed absurd comedy. This show isn’t going to be the most creative or intellectually challenging in the season, that much is certain, but will fit the bill for an ultra-light romantic comedy.
Allison to Lillia

It’s been quite a while since I last watched an adventure anime series, so AtL turned out to be a refreshing surprise within the seasonful of mecha, action and fanservice. The retro-fiction setting and aviation theme are backed up by quite well designed characters and story execution which gives the illusion of laid-back slice-of-life while creeping in with a textbook adventure story of a hidden treasure that could stop the war between two old enemies. Also, Allison is so much win.

Animal features seem to be the fad of the year in the anime industry, for which we probably can thank the much loved Spicy Wolf of the past season. It’s hard to say anything about this show from the basis of just one episode except that it doesn’t seem to be anything too remarkable – that being said however, I’ve rarely been able to say no to cute miko-girls.
Bus Gamer

BG is a series with choppy animation, confusing and extremely hasty storyline and completely lacking in the cute girls-department too! But still there’s something about the show that I like. I’ve always been a fan of dark, gritty stories and the merciless, cruel atmosphere of Bus Gamer fits into that description like a fist in the face. However being only a 3-episode series means that BG ends as fast as it starts, which isn’t very surprising when considering that it’s based on a single volume of manga that consists of 11 chapters – only part of Bus Gamer story that has been published. I honestly have no idea why this was decided to be adapted as anime. Still worth checking out though, at least three episodes means that it won’t waste one’s time much.

URGH!
This concludes my listing. With a bunch of promising titles running, I’m expecting a lot out of spring 08 after a long winter of harem, romance and very poor action. Code Geass s2 and Macross Frontier were mostly what I was looking forward to, but it indeed turned out that the potential of this season isn’t just limited to these two.
